A recent report conducted by ResumeBuilder surveyed 750 business leaders and found that 44% forecasted layoffs this year due to AI efficiencies. New research from the University of Pennsylvania warns that nearly 300 million jobs in the U.S. and Europe face exposure to AI automation... and about a quarter of these jobs could be eliminated entirely by AI. Google has already leaked that they're planning to lay off 30,000 employees. 2024 will be remembered as the year when the global AI layoff bloodbath began.
Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO of Coursera, says, “What is happening, and what is going to be happening in the next 12 to 18 to 24 months is going to be unlike anything that CEOs have ever seen. I think Generative AI will be more disruptive than COVID.” And this is a dangerous in a politically charged environment.
Larger enterprises need to consider the risk of grass roots social media campaigns that might emerge to punish any large company move first into AI layoffs. In highly polarized times like these, it only takes one demagogue to get people protesting and boycotting, and next thing you know, they're chanting “robots will not replace us” in front of your building.
So how could an enterprise minimize these risk? How can companies optimally deploy generative AI, that will minimize the human pain of the coming transition? We explored this issue and have written a white paper, titled "Human Centric AI Deployment" – which offers strategic imperatives for organizations seeking to optimally deploy AI in 2024.
This white paper the HUMAN model that advocates ethical AI deployment to mitigate against such risks, minimize human pain, and keep an eye on the ROI.
The model offers these five principles:
- Harmonize – to balance financial gains with minimizing employee/customer disruption.
- Uptrain – to prioritize scalable AI skills training before layoffs begin.
- Merge – develop AI-based solutions that synergize human and machine intelligence.
- Align – to mitigate societal impacts, preventing biases and ethical infringements.
- Navigate – to understand an adhere to emerging legal/ethical guidelines.
This is a compassionate approach to AI deployment that enhances human capabilities and aligns with ethical considerations, and also, fosters collaboration and innovation. This human-centric model could provide a shared vision for how to leverage AI that empowers human potential, minimizes the pain of this coming transition for society, all while maximizing your ROI.
